Has Venice FL ever had a hurricane?

by April Mackey Iliff

There have been 129 recorded wind events in Venice. The most severe event was a hurricane, which occurred in 1935. It was recorded as a category 5 with 1-min sustained wind speeds up to 184 mph and 3-second wind gusts up to 236 mph.
Learn about event methodology:

Does Venice have Wind Risk?

Venice has a extreme Wind Factor™ risk based on the projected likelihood and speed of hurricane, tornado, or severe storm winds impacting it. It is most at risk from hurricanes. Average maximum wind speeds in Venice are higher now than they were 30 years ago, and 100% of homes in Venice have at least some risk.

In addition to damaging properties, severe wind events can knock down trees or scatter debris that can cause harm to anyone outside during an event, or cut off access to utilities, emergency services, transportation, and may impact the overall economic well-being of an area.

Despite the lore of Venice being protected from hurricanes, these major tropical storms have had an impact on the area for centuries.  Below are some resources to assist you before and after these disasters strike.

The Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative and the Heritage Emergency Task Force (HENTF) share materials to help those in the U.S. and abroad be fully prepared in all aspects of disaster risk management and emergency response.

To further this effort, the Department of State Division of Historical Resources has prepared guidance to address the unique needs of historic resources in preparation for and in response to a disaster.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fact Sheet "After the Flood: Advice for Salvaging Damaged Family Treasures" provides advice and guidance for saving family heirlooms, photos, and other keepsakes.

The National Park Service through the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training offers series of Preservation in Practice: Disasters brochures, including this one on salvaging wet photographs.
